graphite, gold pen and charcoal on paper 21cm x 30cm
private collection
One of three sketches portraying a memorable experience in Colorado, where a dusty trail was followed into the mountains to visit the grave of Doc Holliday, legendary side kick to Wyatt Earp. This centre piece depicting one of three friends (left and right panels represent the other two) attempts to convey the midday heat and the colourful life lead by Holliday - more than hinted at by the epitaph and illustrations on the headstone. Comic like almost, the drawing shows a disregard for some of the conventions of representational art.
